Strasbourg. Vinh does women’s nails: “My mother taught me everything”

“I didn’t think I would do this job,” says Vinh Nguyen, 22 and Nail technician in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin). Today, although he continues his studies in sport, he assures that he will not stop doing women’s nails even after graduation. He told why Strasbourg News.

“Women find it original to have a man do their nails”

When you arrive at the Vinyongles salon in Strasbourg, the decoration is neat, with bottles of nail polish of all colors lined up on a shelf and pots of resin placed on the window sill. Specialized nail lamps are also arranged on the central table.

And, to the surprise of the customers, it is not a woman who settles in the chair to start the manicure, but Vinh Nguyen. “Women find it original to have a man do their nails,” he says.

The young man opened his own salon two months ago: “I didn’t originally think of doing this job, but I like it, because it’s never the same thing. Each person has a different idea of ​​what they want to do on their nails, it’s never repetitive”, assures the nail technician.

“My mother taught me everything, it was natural for me”

For Vinh Nguyen, it all started as a teenager, in Vietnam, his country of origin. There, when he came home from school, he sometimes helped his mother, who is also a nail technician.

“My mother taught me everything, it was natural for me,” he describes. However, at the time, the young man was sometimes embarrassed to exercise this “woman’s job”.

“Before, I was very complex to do that. My mother’s clients were in class with me. So I had my little reputation… some people thought I was gay. Now I don’t care a bit, ”says Vinh Nguyen, who laughs about it today.

A nail technician who intends to continue

At 14, the young man joined his mother in France and continued to practice nails in addition to his studies. He also worked six months in a nail bar in Strasbourg. Now self-employed, Vinh Nguyen works with resin… a traditional technique handed down by his mother.

Today, Vinh Nguyen wants to finish his studies to become a teacher in adapted physical activity in hospitals, to help the elderly. But, he assures her, even later, he won’t stop putting on nails… to the great pleasure of his mother, who says she is delighted with her son’s career.
